The brand new Take It or Leave It facility at the Edson and District Recycling Depot is scheduled to open in early April.
“We’re trying for April 12,” depot manager Anne Auriat said.
The new building, estimated to cost $100,000, will be separate from the depot. The standalone facility is located just east of the depot.
“Because of the popularity of the program it was felt a standalone building would be the best,” Auriat said.
The new building will be located away from the current heavy traffic area — so recyclers and Take It or Leave It patrons won’t be crossing paths. This should alleviate the busy nature of weekends at the depot.
“Fridays and Saturdays are a zoo here,” Auriat said.
The new Take It or Leave It building will have two entrances, one for drop off on the building’s west side and another for pick-up on the east end of the structure. The new arrangement is a hit with some — for others not so much because it will make it tougher for patrons to check out the incoming goods.
The new building will be twice as large as the current Take It or Leave It with 2,400 square feet of space. The new building measures 40 by 60 feet.
The new Take It or Leave It will be powered by a solar module system. Some of the power generated will be stored in batteries. A separate battery room is being incorporated into the facility.
In the new facility depot workers will label and test items when they come in. They will test out the items to see if they work and label the item appropriately.
The new building will have plenty of windows, especially on the south side. The abundance of windows will not only light the facility it will help heat it as well.
The new Take It or Leave was funded by a variety of sources including an Alberta government Community Facility Enhancement Program grant, Shell Fuelling for Change funding and municipal money.
The building is environmentally friendly. The roof is made of recycled material, while eco paint was used throughout the structure, Auriat said. Oriented strand board was utilized for the construction of the building and recycled material will be used for shelving throughout the building.
The new building is insulated, unlike the current Take It or Leave It space, she added.
