Posted by on Feb 26, 2014 in Events Archive | Comments Off on Environment Week Challenge – Bike/Walk to School

IMG_0915Where: Edson Elementary/Middle Schools
When: May 26 to June 6, 2014

The challenge is to encourage students to choose to walk or bike to school rather than being driven. Out of town students are also part of the challenge and can participate by doing an activity that is beneficial to the environment, such as helping with family compost, cleaning their neighbourhood, etc. We want to celebrate our Alberta Environment and have students realize that they can make a difference. Students will hopefully discover new things about the environment and how they can contribute to protecting it.

Drivers, please be extra cautious at this time as there will likely be more children on the streets.

November 5, 2013 6pm – 7pm

Community Gardens – Growing More than Food!

vegetables Not since the “victory gardens” of the first and second world wars have community gardens seen such a surge in popularity. What is driving this groundswell of community gardens across the country? What are some of the benefits of community gardens compared to gardening on your own? How can we design community gardens to promote healthy communities, food literacy, and bio-diversity? Ron Berezan (aka “The Urban Farmer”) will draw from his many years of work with community gardens in Edmonton and his experiences in urban agriculture in Canada, the United States, Cuba and beyond to explore these and many other questions.

Ron Berezan – Biography

Ron has had training in the “Bio-Intensive” organic gardening method and in Permaculture Design. Ron is a Master Gardener and a member of the Society of Organic Urban Land Care Professionals (SOUL). He has been a frequent CBC gardening commentator and has been published in numerous gardening magazines. Currently, Ron operates The Urban Farmer, an organic gardening, edible landscaping and Permaculture design service throughout western Canada and beyond.
