The Edson & District Recycling Society (EDRS) is excited to announce the Grand Opening on Saturday September 13th at 11:00 am of our:

Hazardous Waste Collection Place

For some time now, the EDRS and our partners have been planning and building a site to handle a range of toxic or hazardous materials including:

  • Used motor oil , filters and containers
  •  Paint: cans and aerosols
  •  Florescent light tubes and bulbs
  • Household hazardous chemicals and batteries
  • Aerosol containers, small propane tanks and fire extinguishers
  • Electronics – TV’s, computers, printers, laptops, cables

These are potentially hazardous to human health and our environment.   They contain harmful chemicals, compounds and heavy metals such as mercury and lead.    These materials need to be stored in a protective and safe way prior to being recycled or destroyed.

The Depot handles a large volume of such materials.  On a per monthly basis we handle the equivalent of a semi-truck load of:

  • Used motor oil – about 4,000 liters,
  • Used oil filters – 4  barrels
  • Oil containers – one tonne
  • Household batteries, paint cans and aerosol containers – 20 barrels
  • Florescent light tubes – lined up end to end, would be the length of 10 football fields

With this new facility our communities will be well prepared to handle a full range of hazardous waste in an environmentally safe manner now and into the future!  We will continue to encourage people to switch to less hazardous materials, and information on alternatives can be found at westyellowheadrecycles.ca
