Commercial – Facts about ICI

Industrial, Commercial and Institutional includes solid waste generated in a municipality by all three of these IC&I sources and includes the following:

  • Industrial materials: generated by manufacturing and secondary industries and managed off-site from the manufacturing operation
  • Commercial Materials: those generated by commercial operations such as shopping centres, restaurants, offices, etc.
  • Institutional materials: those generated by institutional facilities such as schools, hospitals, government facilities, seniors homes, universities, etc.

How much waste does the IC&I stream contribute to the overall waste produced by a municipality?

In 2010, the non-residential sector1 in Alberta:

  • Disposed of almost 3 million tonnes of waste, which was 75% of the total waste disposed of in Alberta that year
  • Diverted a little over 380 thousand tonnes of waste from the landfill. This is a diversion rate of 11%

Composition of the IC&I Waste Stream

The City of Calgary has done a great deal of work with the IC&I sector in order to reduce its overall contribution to the waste stream. Part of this process consisted of an assessment of what exactly makes up the IC&I waste stream. The results are displayed below.
